The course reviews basic personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous material and CBRN agent knowledge, medical triage and patient decontamination of in an incident involving hazardous substances. Practical exercises incorporate considerations for ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, pediatric patients, patients with functional needs, patients of varying language and cultural backgrounds and advanced life saving interventions in a decontamination environment. In addition, participants will practice techniques for chemical and radiation hazard detection and cold weather decontamination. The course also address best practices for patient decontamination team response protocols. The content of this course aligns with decontamination capability guidelines as specified by both the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and ASPR’s Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP).
